Boeing Outlook Highlights Aviation Services and Workforce Demand Through 2045

Boeing has released its latest Services Market Outlook and Pilot & Technician Outlook, forecasting a $4.9 trillion commercial aviation support and services market over the next 20 years. The company also estimates the industry will require more than 2.4 million new aviation professionals by 2045 to meet growing demand.

The outlook follows Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook, which projects continued growth in passenger traffic and commercial aviation over the next two decades. According to the report, airlines and aviation businesses are expected to expand their operations despite short-term market disruptions.

Services Market Driven by Fleet and Technology

Boeing expects several trends to shape the aviation services market through 2045, including:

• Greater focus on aircraft lifecycle management
• Increased use of digital technologies and data-driven services
• Changing regional demand for aviation services
• Growing demand for aviation professionals
• Workforce retirements leading to higher recruitment needs

Chris Raymond, President and CEO of Boeing Global Services, said the company expects continued demand for aviation services as airline fleets become more digitally connected. He added that Boeing will continue to invest in digital capabilities, workforce development, and customer-focused services to support airline operations.

More Than 2.4 Million Aviation Professionals Needed

Boeing’s 2026 Pilot and Technician Outlook estimates the global aviation industry will require approximately:

• 674,000 pilots
• 728,000 maintenance technicians
• 1,023,000 cabin crew members

This represents a total requirement of 2.425 million new aviation professionals by 2045.

According to Boeing, around two-thirds of this demand will replace retiring employees, while the remaining one-third will support the expansion of airline fleets.

The report also highlights the growing role of competency-based training, simulation technologies and digital learning tools in preparing the next generation of aviation professionals.

Chris Broom, Vice President of Commercial Training Solutions at Boeing Global Services, said investment in workforce development and modern training technologies will help the aviation industry address future staffing requirements.

Regional Demand Through 2045

Boeing expects demand for aviation personnel and services across all major regions.

• Eurasia is forecast to require 571,000 new aviation professionals and account for $1.185 trillion in services demand.
• North America is expected to require 438,000 personnel, with services demand reaching $995 billion.
• China is projected to need 425,000 aviation professionals and generate $875 billion in services demand.
• Southeast Asia is forecast to require 258,000 personnel, while the Middle East is expected to need 236,000.
• South Asia is projected to require 150,000 aviation professionals, with aviation services demand totalling $220 billion.

The outlook indicates that continued fleet growth, digital technologies and workforce development will remain central to the aviation industry’s long-term expansion through 2045.
