Skáld Akureyri Brings Nordic Design and Icelandic Heritage to North Iceland

Hilton has opened Skáld Akureyri, Curio Collection by Hilton, a new hotel in the centre of Akureyri, North Iceland. Located on the historic Hafnarstræti street, the property combines contemporary accommodation with Icelandic culture, literature and Nordic design.

The hotel features 71 guest rooms and 15 serviced apartments, offering accommodation for both leisure and business travellers visiting North Iceland.

Inspired by Icelandic Storytelling

The name Skáld, meaning “poet” or “storyteller” in Icelandic, reflects the country’s literary heritage. Throughout the hotel, guests will find interiors inspired by Icelandic poetry, handcrafted Nordic materials and artwork created to celebrate local culture.

Magnea Þórey Hjálmarsdóttir, General Manager of Skáld Akureyri, said the hotel has been designed to reflect the identity of Akureyri while combining design, literature, dining and hospitality in one destination.

Accommodation and Facilities

Alongside guest rooms, the serviced apartments include fully equipped kitchens, living areas and private balconies, making them suitable for longer stays.

The hotel’s restaurant, Abba-labba-lá, serves Nordic cuisine prepared using locally sourced Icelandic ingredients and seasonal produce.

Guests also have access to a fitness centre and two rooftop terraces offering views across the town, the fjord and the surrounding landscape.

Exploring North Iceland

Located just a short walk from Akureyri town centre and the waterfront, the hotel provides convenient access to shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.

It also serves as a base for exploring the Diamond Circle, whale-watching tours, skiing areas, the midnight sun and the Northern Lights.

David Kelly, Senior Vice President, Continental Europe at Hilton, said the opening strengthens Curio Collection by Hilton’s presence in Europe while offering travellers another destination in Iceland.

Convenient Access

Akureyri can be reached by a 40-minute domestic flight from Reykjavík or a four-and-a-half-hour drive along Iceland’s Ring Road. The city also offers a growing number of international and seasonal air connections through Akureyri Airport.

The hotel participates in the Hilton Honors loyalty programme, allowing members to earn and redeem points while enjoying member benefits during their stay.
