NATO Nations Launch Airbus A400M Multinational Fleet Initiative
Airbus A400M Project Aims to Strengthen European Air Mobility
At the NATO Summit Defence Forum, the governments of Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye and the United Kingdom launched a new High Visibility Project centred on the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.
The initiative builds on the experience of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) programme and aims to strengthen strategic airlift capabilities among European NATO allies through greater cooperation and shared resources.
The project is designed around a pooling-and-sharing model, allowing participating nations to collaborate on aircraft operations, maintenance, training, infrastructure, and procurement. The long-term objective is to establish a multinational Airbus A400M fleet that supports both national defence requirements and NATO operations.
The programme is expected to improve operational flexibility across a range of missions, including air-to-air refuelling, disaster relief, medical evacuation and firefighting.

Ben Bridge, Chairman of Airbus Defence and Space UK, said the A400M has become an important part of military air mobility across several European NATO member states. He added that the aircraft’s planned capability upgrades will continue to support defence operations in the years ahead.
Inspired by the Multinational MRTT Fleet
The A400M initiative follows the model established by the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF), which has operated the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft since 2020.
The MMF enables participating nations to share NATO-owned Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft, improving interoperability and reducing operating costs through shared ownership and operations.
Finland Joins the MMF Programme
During the NATO Summit, Finland officially joined the Multinational MRTT Fleet, increasing the number of participating countries to nine.
The MMF now includes the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
Currently, nine Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft are in operation, out of a total order of 12. The fleet has supported NATO missions on the Alliance’s eastern flank, civilian and refugee evacuation operations in Afghanistan, and multinational exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Airbus-led programme continues to demonstrate how participating nations can cooperate through shared resources while strengthening defence and operational readiness across Europe.
