The Sen Opens in Uttarakhand as an Intimate Hillside Retreat Near Lansdowne

Nestled on a quiet ridge in Velda Bada near Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, The Sen is a private retreat embraced by hills and overlooking a wooded valley. Designed for slow, immersive stays, the property encourages guests to engage with the landscape through stillness, nature, and personal connection.
Mornings here start with drifting clouds and birdsong, while evenings feature shifting light across the valley. The retreat has been designed to promote a relaxed pace where guests can spend time outdoors, share meals, and connect with the surrounding environment.
The property was designed by Nakul Sen, whose approach emphasizes a connection with the landscape. Built across levels that follow the natural contours of the hillside and existing trees, the retreat was developed over four years of planning and construction.

“When I first came across this quiet area in the hills of Velda Bada, the surroundings resonated with me,” says Nakul Sen, Founder and Creative Director of The Sen.
“It marked a new chapter in my creative journey where materials, light, proportions, and atmosphere could come together to form a space meant for sensory immersion. The Sen is a tribute to the hills that shaped it.”
Nakul Sen has over thirty years of experience in the fashion industry and applies his interest in spatial design and layered interiors to the hospitality sector. His approach has been influenced by Old Delhi and travels to remote locations, including collaborations with local artisans and the use of regional materials.

Operations at the retreat are guided by Anand Shekhawat, a hotelier and sustainability-focused entrepreneur with over twenty years of experience. As the founder of Sariska Lodge, he has previously worked with Aman Resorts as Global Sustainability Head and Regional Director for India, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, as well as with Oberoi Hotels & Resorts. His involvement shapes the retreat’s service philosophy, culinary direction, and guest experiences.
Design Rooted in the Landscape
Spread across four acres of forested land, The Sen has been designed to integrate with its surroundings. Guests arrive through a rustic entrance that opens into pathways made of stacked riverbed stones, leading to structures set among trees and foliage.
The retreat features four private suites, a lounge, an outdoor pool, a dining area, a kitchen, and an organic garden. Several outdoor spaces provide quiet areas for relaxation and views of the surrounding hills.
Architecturally, the design follows a minimalist approach, using natural materials. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls bring in forest views, while light fabrics soften the interiors. Materials such as stone, wood, cotton, silk, and handcrafted artefacts have been used throughout the spaces to create continuity with the natural setting.
Dining Inspired by Local Produce
Dining at The Sen focuses on seasonal ingredients and regional flavours. Produce from the property’s organic garden is complemented by dairy and vegetables sourced from nearby villages.
Meals range from regional Pahadi dishes to international dishes, served in outdoor settings overlooking the valley. Communal dining tables, handmade crockery, linens, and simple table settings shape the overall experience.
The culinary programme is led by Chef Pankaj Sharma, whose previous work with Aman Resorts influences his approach to regional and global cooking techniques. Tea experiences and workshops led by tea sommelier Anamika Singh of Anandini Himalaya Tea add another layer to the culinary offerings.
Outdoor Experiences in the Region
The surrounding ecosystem forms an important part of the stay. Activities organised at the retreat allow guests to explore the region’s natural and cultural landscape.
Birdwatching walks introduce visitors to species found in the area, including Himalayan Warblers, Red-billed Blue Magpies, and White-crested Laughing Thrushes. Guided drives and nature walks may also reveal wildlife such as Yellow-throated Martens, Barking Deer, and occasionally Leopards.
Guests can also explore nearby villages, walk along riverbeds, or take part in quieter activities such as yoga sessions in the forest, guided treks, and morning walks.
Intimate Gatherings and Retreats
With only four suites, The Sen is suited for private stays and small group gatherings. The property can host groups of eight to twelve guests for occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, or small retreats.
Open spaces, glass-fronted interiors, and poolside areas allow the team to organise shared meals, evening gatherings, and outdoor celebrations. Dining set-ups, décor, and service are arranged according to the nature of the occasion.
