Singapore Airlines expands role in Air India operations
Singapore Airlines is increasing its operational involvement in Air India as the airline continues to address financial and operational challenges. As per a report by NDTV, the move reflects a shift towards a more hands-on role within the airline.
According to people familiar with the matter, Singapore Airlines has placed personnel in key functions at Air India, including flight operations, engineering and maintenance. These areas are considered central to improving operational performance.
Air India operations see deeper Singapore Airlines involvement
While Singapore Airlines is increasing its operational role, the Tata Group, which holds a majority stake in Air India, continues to oversee areas such as commercial strategy, human resources, finance and information technology.
The development indicates a change in the level of engagement between the two airlines, with Singapore Airlines moving beyond a strategic partnership to a more direct role in day-to-day operations.
The airline’s turnaround plan, following its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2021, has faced challenges, including financial losses, regulatory issues and external disruptions to operations. These include higher fuel costs, airspace restrictions and operational compliance concerns.

Singapore Airlines has stated that it continues to work with the Tata Group to support AI’s transformation programme, though it has not provided detailed comments on operational or financial specifics.
The airline’s increased involvement comes as both partners assess the next phase of Air India’s restructuring, including leadership changes and long-term financial planning.
