IHCL Registers Sound Mark for Taj Brand in India
Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has secured trademark registration for the Taj sonic sound, a sound mark associated with its Taj brand. The registration represents a development in brand protection practices within the Indian hospitality sector.

Commenting on the registration, Rajendra Misra, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, IHCL, said that recognition of the Taj sonic sound as a trademark reflects the company’s approach to safeguarding brand equity and adapting its intellectual property strategy to evolving customer engagement.
The sound mark provides legal protection to Taj’s sonic identity, recognising sound as a brand asset alongside visual elements. As hospitality experiences increasingly extend across multiple sensory touchpoints, sonic branding has become an important tool for building brand recall and familiarity.
Previously, Taj had obtained trademark protection for the three-dimensional shape of The Taj Mahal Palace, highlighting its ongoing efforts to protect distinctive elements of its brand heritage through intellectual property measures.

IHCL was represented in this matter by Fidus Law Chambers, led by Managing Partner Shwetasree Majumder, with support from Partner Astha Negi and Senior Associate Umang Gola.
Founded by Jamsetji Tata, IHCL opened its first hotel, The Taj Mahal Palace in Bombay, in 1903. Today, the company operates a portfolio of hotels across India and international markets under multiple brands, including Taj, SeleQtions, Vivanta, Gateway and Ginger, and is listed on the BSE and NSE.
