Heathrow Records Busiest January as Passenger Volumes and Service Levels Rise
Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest January on record, with 6.5 million passengers travelling through the airport during the month. This represents an increase of more than 2% compared to January last year, despite periods of adverse weather across the US and Europe.
The airport experienced several peak days with more than 250,000 passengers, exceeding the previous January high of 246,000. More than 201,000 passengers travelled through Heathrow on Blue Monday, reflecting continued demand for early-year leisure travel.
January also marked the first full month in which all passengers used Heathrow’s new security lanes across every terminal. The rollout supported faster processing times while maintaining safety and operational efficiency. Over 95% of passengers rated their experience as good or excellent during the month.
Heathrow handled almost 125,000 tonnes of cargo in January, reinforcing its role in supporting UK trade. The airport facilitates over £200 billion of UK trade annually and handles more than 70% of UK–non-EU air cargo exports by value.
However, new figures from Airports Council International (ACI) indicate that while Heathrow continues to perform strongly, its passenger growth is now trailing the European average due to capacity constraints. A year after the UK Chancellor identified Heathrow expansion as central to national economic growth, the airport has highlighted the need for regulatory clarity to progress its expansion programme.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said: “I am proud of the service, value and global connectivity Heathrow provides to customers. While Heathrow remains Europe’s largest airport, recent figures show that position could be challenged in 2026. Without additional capacity, growth for the UK economy will be limited. Decisions by Ministers and the CAA this year are essential to enable progress on expansion, secure planning permission by 2029, and ensure sufficient passenger and cargo capacity.”
