Frankfurt Airport Expects 9 Million Passengers During Summer Holidays
Frankfurt Airport is preparing for a significant increase in passenger traffic during the summer holiday period, with airport operator Fraport expecting around nine million travellers and 60,000 flight movements between 26 June and 9 August 2026.
The airport will offer connections to 283 destinations across 92 countries during the summer travel season. During the first holiday weekend alone, from 26 to 28 June, approximately 616,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport.
Longer Border Check Waits Expected for Non-EU Travellers
Fraport has advised passengers to prepare for longer waiting times at border control checkpoints, particularly for travellers from non-EU countries.
The increase in processing times is linked to the implementation of the European Union’s Entry Exit System (EES), a new electronic border control system that records traveller information at Schengen Area external borders.
Airport officials said additional staff and passenger flow management measures are being introduced to reduce congestion. However, longer waiting times are still expected during peak travel periods.
Non-EU travellers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure.
Passengers from EU countries, the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and those holding German residence permits are also encouraged to arrive three hours early when travelling to destinations outside the Schengen Area.
Terminal 3 Now Fully Operational
A major change for passengers this summer is the completion of the transition to Terminal 3.
Following the opening of the new terminal, passenger operations at Terminal 2 have been suspended to allow for extensive renovation and modernisation works.
All airlines previously operating from Terminal 2 have moved to Terminal 3, meaning all flights now operate from Terminals 1 and 3.
Passengers are advised to check their airline’s departure terminal before travelling to the airport.
New Sky Line Connects Terminals
The airport’s new Sky Line people mover now connects Terminals 1 and 3, making transfers easier for connecting passengers.
The system recently completed technical testing and trial operations ahead of the busy summer season.
Frankfurt Airport Terminal 3 also offers new passenger facilities including:
- Comfortable seating areas
- Rest zones
- Children’s play areas
- Modern passenger amenities
Enhanced Security Screening Experience
Most passengers departing from Terminal 1 and all passengers departing from Terminal 3 can now benefit from upgraded CT security screening technology.
The new system allows travellers to:
- Carry liquids in containers up to two litres
- Leave liquids inside hand luggage
- Keep electronic devices inside bags during screening
Passengers can also reserve security screening time slots in advance through the FRA SmartWay service, helping to reduce waiting times.
Self-Service and Digital Travel Options Expand
Many airlines operating at Frankfurt Airport continue to expand digital services for passengers.
Available options include:
- Online check-in from 24 hours before departure
- Self-service baggage drop facilities
- Early baggage check-in services
- Home luggage collection through Airport for selected airlines
The luggage collection service at Frankfurt Airport is available for passengers travelling with airlines such as:
- Lufthansa
- Condor
- Discover Airlines
- SWISS
Airport Advises Early Parking Reservations
Due to high demand during the holiday season, Frankfurt Airport recommends that passengers reserve parking spaces in advance.
Airport officials also encourage travellers to consider public transport options when travelling to the airport.
Passengers are advised to review airline requirements and destination-specific travel regulations before departure to ensure a smooth travel experience during the busy summer period.
