Airbus and Partners Sign NH90 Block 2 Architecture Study Contract
NATO Helicopter Management Agency has awarded a contract to NHIndustries, a consortium comprising Airbus, Leonardo and GKN Aerospace, to undertake the NH90 Block 2 architecture study.
NH90 Block 2 Architecture Study Launched by NAHEMA

The study will focus on defining the next phase of upgrades for the NH90 helicopter platform, including structural enhancements and advanced system capabilities.
Key Upgrade Areas
The Block 2 programme is expected to introduce improvements such as modular avionics, increased configuration commonality, and enhanced maintenance and performance features. It will also explore capabilities in connectivity, collaborative combat and crewed-uncrewed teaming.
Study Timeline and Objectives
The two-year architecture study will build on the existing Block 1 programme and is aimed at preparing the platform for operational requirements beyond 2040. It will run in parallel with the European Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies programme, which focuses on the future of rotorcraft technologies in Europe.
The objective of the study is to generate technical insights that will support NATO Helicopter Management Agency and participating nations in selecting upgrade pathways aligned with long-term defence requirements.

“The NH90 has recently reached 500,000 flight hours, a testimony to its maturity and operational relevance, as well as its continuously upgraded capabilities. The Sea Tiger and the NH90 Standard 2 are establishing themselves as the state-of-the-art benchmark for naval and tactical operations and we are already preparing the midterm evolution of the NH90 with the Block 1 upgrade. The signing of the Block 2 contract now marks a decisive step in ensuring the NH90 remains at the forefront of European defence for decades to come,” said Matthieu Louvot, CEO of Airbus Helicopters.
“As NATO and its member nations define the future of vertical lift, Airbus and its partners are committed to evolving this proven platform to meet the most demanding operational challenges of the future battlespace,” he added.
Programme Significance
The NH90 programme has accumulated over 500,000 flight hours, reflecting its operational maturity and continued deployment across defence forces. The Block 2 initiative represents a step towards sustaining the platform’s relevance in evolving operational environments.
