Khon Performance “Bali’s Unbreakable Oath” to Be Staged at Thailand Cultural Centre
The SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, will present the 18th annual Khon performance featuring the staging of the Ramakien’s chapter “Bali’s Unbreakable Oath.” This event will take place at the Thailand Cultural Centre in Bangkok from November 6 to December 8, 2025.
Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Khon is regarded as one of Thailand’s most important classical art forms, combining dance, drama, music, and traditional costumes. The art form continues to be performed by new generations of artists and attracts audiences in Thailand and abroad.
This year’s production retells the story of Bali, Sukhrip, and Phra Ram in their struggle against Thotsakan. The narrative presents episodes of conflict, shifting alliances, and sacrifice, exploring themes of loyalty, gratitude, and truth.
The storyline includes Bali’s encounter with Thotsakan in disguise, Sukhrip’s alliance with Phra Ram, and the intervention of Hanuman and his army.
The performance will feature newly choreographed sequences, updated narration, and live classical Thai music. The staging includes scenes such as the celestial palace of Phra Isuan, Thotsakan’s royal elephant, and the chariots of Phra Ram and Phra Lak, supported by detailed costumes prepared for this season.
Presented by emerging Khon performers, Bali’s Unbreakable Oath continues the tradition of showcasing Thailand’s cultural heritage while engaging audiences with the values embedded in the Ramakien.
