Global Air Passenger Demand Grows in 2025 Amid Capacity and Supply Chain Pressures
International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its full-year and December 2025 passenger market performance data, highlighting continued growth in air travel demand alongside persistent capacity and supply chain challenges.
Total passenger demand in 2025, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), increased 5.3% compared to 2024. Capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), rose 5.2%, while the average passenger load factor (PLF) reached 83.6%, up 0.1 percentage points year on year.
International passenger demand grew 7.1% in 2025, with capacity expanding 6.8%. The international load factor averaged 83.5%, up 0.2 percentage points from 2024.
Domestic demand rose 2.4%, while capacity increased 2.5%. The domestic load factor averaged 83.7%, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous year.
December 2025 closed the year with overall demand rising 5.6% year on year, capacity growing 5.9%, and a load factor of 83.7%.

Commenting on the results, Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, said demand growth in 2025 was more closely aligned with long-term industry trends following the post-pandemic recovery. He highlighted two ongoing challenges: the need to advance decarbonisation through supportive policy frameworks, particularly to scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and ongoing supply chain disruptions that are affecting aircraft deliveries, engine availability, and maintenance capacity. These constraints led airlines to extend aircraft utilisation and operate with higher seat occupancy while managing rising costs.
