London’s Future of Luxury? Oberoi Hotel Set to Open

London and other British cities may welcome the Oberoi Hotel by March 2028. Oberoi’s parent firm, EiH, announced it will establish a company in the UK. Although this firm would have a GBP 30 million authorized share capital, EIH and its subsidiaries will hold a 51 percent ownership position. Reliance Industries, owned by Mukesh Ambani and holding an 18% share in EIH, announced in August of last year that it will work with Oberoi to co-manage three properties, one of which is in the UK.

Indian hospitality players would be better represented in London with this move, as Taj currently operates two hotels in the city. Winston Churchill’s Old War Office in the centre of London was recently transformed into an opulent hotel by the Indian-origin Hinduja Group. Taj boasts 27 hotels overseas, with another 10 in the works. Oberoi follows, with locations across Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt. In Colombo, ITC Hotels has established its first property overseas.

EIH outlined its intentions for the UK, which has a sizable Indian diaspora, in a BSE filing. In a regulatory filing, the business stated that a meeting on Monday approved an investment in a company to be registered in the UK. “(To) enable the company to have a hotel presence in London, with the UK being a key source market.”

“There will be six rooms and eleven suites at the Oberoi, a luxury hotel in London. The anticipated investment is 15 million GBP. Regarding the future of London Oberoi, EIH stated that “the hotel will be operational by the fourth quarter of Financial Year 2027–28.”

In the meantime, EIH—which is expanding rapidly due to a legal dispute involving the promoters of the Oberoi family around the late PRS Oberoi’s wills—will also build a Trident hotel in Pune. It “authorized an investment to create a mixed-use project in Pune, consisting of a commercial development with office space, food and beverage-focused retail outlets (in 4.08 lakh sq. ft.), and a Trident Hotel with approximately 175 keys. The project is expected to cost INR 972 crore in total.

Q1 FY 2029–2030 is when commercial operations are anticipated to start,” EIH stated in a regulatory filing. In August of last year, Reliance Industries claimed the following: “Sports and recreation facilities in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, are owned by Stoke Park Ltd, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries.” The amenities include a hotel, sports facilities, and one of Europe’s best golf courses. Oberoi will work with RIL to modernize the amenities, establish it as a renowned global destination, and provide visitors with an unmatched experience.”
