Emirates Updates Onboard Safety Rules for Power Bank Use from 1 October 2025
Effective 1 October 2025, Emirates will prohibit the use of any power bank during flights. While customers may still carry one power bank onboard, specific conditions will apply. Power banks may not be used to charge devices in the cabin, nor charged utilizing the aircraft’s power supply.
Key Points of the New Rules:
Only one power bank per passenger, with a capacity of under 100 Watt Hours.
Power banks cannot be used to charge personal devices during the flight.
Charging a power bank using the aircraft’s power supply is not allowed.
All accepted power banks must display capacity rating information.
Power banks must be stored in the seat pocket or a bag under the seat, not in overhead bins.
Power banks remain prohibited in checked luggage.
Reason for the Change
Following a safety review, Emirates has introduced these measures to reduce risks linked to lithium battery-powered devices. Increased use of power banks worldwide has coincided with a rise in lithium battery incidents in aviation. Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries can pose a hazard if damaged or overcharged, potentially leading to ‘thermal runaway,’ which can cause overheating, fire, or release of harmful gases.

By prohibiting in-flight use and requiring accessible storage, Emirates aims to ensure that in the event of a malfunction, cabin crew can respond promptly.
