Fortunately, all 80 passengers on Flight 4819 from Minneapolis were evacuated safely despite the crash landing.
Delta Plane Flips, All Safe
On Monday afternoon, a Delta Air Lines jet encountered strong winds and drifting snow while attempting to land at Toronto Pearson Airport. The aircraft crashed and overturned on the tarmac, ultimately coming to rest on its back with at least one wing broken off. Fortunately, all 80 passengers on Flight 4819 from Minneapolis were evacuated safely despite the crash landing.
Images and footage captured flames and dark smoke rising from the aircraft. Passengers emerged from the front and rear doors, crossing the snow-blanketed tarmac as firefighters doused the plane with water.
Delta reported that at least 18 individuals sustained injuries. Among them, one person suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma centre, while a child also had critical but non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining injured individuals were transported to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. Officials noted that 22 passengers were Canadians.
Pete Koukov, 28, a professional skier from Colorado who was on the flight, stated that nothing appeared to be amiss during the plane’s final descent.
“The second that the wheels hit the ground, then everything happened,” Mr. Koukov said in an interview on Monday night. “The next thing I know, we’re sideways.”
He said that the plane had skidded onto its right side and that he had been sitting in a window seat on the left side.
“So you look down and you see sparks and flames on the side that’s touching the ground,” he said. “We ended up completely upside-down. I unbuckled pretty fast and kind of lowered myself to the floor, which was the ceiling. People were panicking.”

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Bombardier CRJ900, operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta subsidiary, crashed at approximately 2:45 p.m.; however, Delta later stated that it occurred at 2:15 p.m. This crash is likely to cause aviation turmoil in Canada for several days. The airport, the largest and busiest in the country, is already struggling with delays and cancellations due to multiple winter storms.
