Airbus Secures AI Contract for French Armed Forces Systems
Artificial Intelligence Integration to Support French Defence SystemsThe French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has awarded Airbus Defence and Space a framework contract valued at up to €50 million to integrate artificial intelligence into systems used by the French armed forces. The agreement covers a range of capabilities, including weapons, communication, information and cybersecurity systems developed by Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters. The programme is being delivered in coordination with the Ministerial Agency for Defence AI, established in 2024 to support the country’s approach to defence-related AI and reduce reliance on external technologies. As part of the initial phase, the project will enhance Spationav, France’s maritime surveillance system. The integration of AI will enable automated processing and consolidation of data from satellite and surveillance sources, supporting more efficient monitoring operations.Further applications under the contract are expected to explore areas such as intelligence, cybersecurity and communications. This includes the use of AI to assist in managing and optimising military telecommunications networks in real time. The increasing volume of data generated by modern defence systems — including satellites, radar, drones and digital platforms — has created a need for tools that can process and organise information efficiently. AI is expected to support this by assisting personnel in handling large datasets and enabling faster analysis in operational environments. The programme also highlights the importance of infrastructure to store, structure and manage the data required for AI systems, forming a key part of France’s broader defence technology strategy.
