IATA Issues Guidance to Standardise In-Cabin Pet Travel
International Air Transport Association has released new operational guidance aimed at improving the management of in-cabin pet travel across airlines. The guidelines cover the full passenger journey, including booking, check-in, boarding, in-flight experience, and arrival, with the objective of creating a more consistent and predictable process for travellers and operators.

IATA Focuses on Consistency in Pet Travel Experience
The initiative follows the organisation’s earlier release of guidance related to travelling with service dogs and forms part of a broader effort to standardise the air travel experience for passengers travelling with animals.
Addressing Passenger Concerns
According to IATA, the updated guidance responds to common challenges faced by passengers travelling with pets. Findings from the organisation’s 2025 Global Passenger Survey indicate that approximately one in four travellers have either travelled or would consider travelling with a pet. Among respondents, 41% cited uncertainty about pet eligibility, 36% were unclear about airline policies, and 34% reported confusion about the overall travel process.
The new guidelines aim to address these concerns by outlining recommended procedures for airlines to improve clarity and communication while maintaining safety and animal welfare standards.
Focus on Consistency and Safety
Brendan Sullivan, Global Head of Cargo at IATA, stated that clearer guidance can help passengers better prepare for travel and enable airlines to deliver a consistent experience. The framework is designed to support industry-wide best practices, ensuring operational efficiency while safeguarding both passengers and animals.
The guidance is expected to assist airlines in aligning their policies and procedures, contributing to improved transparency and a more structured approach to in-cabin pet travel.
