Green Goals: Mamallapuram Leads the Pack in Sustainable Tourism
Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is located near Chennai and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is on track to become India's first Green Destination. The official announcement and presentation of Mamallapuram's final award will take place after an audit in the coming months, making it the first World Heritage Site in the Asia Pacific region to achieve this milestone.
Green Destinations, a Council-accredited certification body based in The Netherlands, supports sustainable destinations, businesses, and communities. To date, 122 destinations worldwide have been awarded Green Destinations certification. The MAMAT Trust fully funded the certification project for Mamallapuram under Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as part of their efforts to recognize Indian culture and heritage.
