Tamil Nadu’s Hill Stations Set to Transform into Tourism Gems

Weekend Retreats Near Chennai

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) plans to develop three hill stations—Yelagiri, Jawadhu, and Kolli Hills—into major tourism hubs. These destinations, located within a six to eight-hour drive from Chennai, aim to offer unique experiences while preserving the natural beauty and tranquillity of hill stations. The initiative is expected to boost the local economy and provide new destinations for nature lovers.

In Yelagiri, TTDC has identified a five-acre government-owned site for constructing a camping site that can accommodate 50 tourists with both conventional and glamping tents. Additionally, the site will feature a zipline, rope walking facilities, and boating. In Kolli Hills, similar developments will occur on a 12-acre site, including an eco-resort and a restaurant with a bonfire area. TTDC is also considering introducing rappelling at the waterfalls.

Kolli Hills, known for its scenic ghat roads with 70 hairpin bends, lacks basic infrastructure, and safety remains a concern. Issues such as the absence of changing rooms or washrooms at waterfalls and the presence of men consuming alcohol openly have been noted. TTDC officials have allocated Rs 2 crore to address these concerns.

Jawadhu Hills, a lesser-known tourist site with fewer than half a dozen hotels, is also part of TTDC’s plan. The focus here is to enhance tourism by involving tribal communities, allowing tourists to visit their homes and learn about their culture. The town is known for its many temples and local festivals. Previously mainly used for film shootings, Jawadhu Hills is now considered to have great tourism potential. TTDC’s focus on this location will generate additional revenue, create job opportunities for local tribal communities, and boost real estate in nearby areas.
