Lufthansa’s 100th Anniversary Boeing 787-9 Arrives in Frankfurt
Lufthansa has taken delivery of a Boeing 787-9 featuring a special anniversary livery, which arrived in Frankfurt after being transferred from the Boeing production facility in Everett, Washington. The aircraft was welcomed at Frankfurt Airport by airline representatives, aviation enthusiasts, and spectators. Members of the Lufthansa Airlines divisional board were also present to receive the aircraft, registered as D-ABPU and named “Berlin”.

Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Airlines, said the arrival marked a critical moment for the airline, noting that the delivery of a new aircraft is always significant, with the anniversary aircraft adding particular symbolic value ahead of Lufthansa’s centenary.

The Boeing 787-9 features a commemorative design that reflects both Lufthansa’s heritage and its future direction. The blue fuselage carries a large white crane motif, with the wings of the emblem extending toward the aircraft’s wings. A “100” marking is displayed on the left side of the fuselage, while “1926 | 2026” appears on the right. An additional “100” is visible on the underside of the aircraft.

Lufthansa will mark 100 years since the founding of the first “Luft Hansa” on January 6, 2026, with the airline’s initial maiden flight having taken place on April 6, 1926. To commemorate the milestone, Lufthansa plans to introduce a six-aircraft anniversary fleet in 2026. In addition to the Boeing 787-9, the fleet will include an Airbus A380, an Airbus A350-1000, an Airbus A350-900, an Airbus A320, and a Boeing 747-8, all to be gradually repainted in the anniversary livery.

The anniversary fleet is expected to be completed by autumn 2026. The newly delivered Boeing 787-9 is scheduled to enter regular service with Lufthansa in the coming weeks.
