Thailand Shines in International Snow Sculpting
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently announced that the Thai team secured second place for their sculpture at the 49th International Snow Sculpture Contest, a feature of the Sapporo Snow Festival. Drawing inspiration from Thailand’s Songkran Festival, this creation captivated judges and attendees, showcasing the country’s cultural heritage and artistic talent.
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, emphasised the significance of this participation, stating: “TAT places great importance on this globally celebrated event. It serves as an excellent opportunity to showcase Thai culture, traditions, and artistic excellence. Through our participation, we wish to inspire global travellers to firsthand experience the iconic Songkran festival in Thailand, which is highlighted as one of the ‘Grand Festivity’ under the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025. “
Songkran is the traditional New Year in Thailand, known as the water festival. This annual celebration occurs from April 13 to 15 across the country, with festivities often extending longer in some regions. Families have to gather and honour their elders. The water pouring during Songkran symbolizes purification, respect, and the granting of good fortune.
The sculpture illustrates the touching relationship between a mother and her baby elephant—renowned symbols of Thailand—joyfully participating in the Songkran water festivities. This artwork celebrates Thailand’s rich traditions while underscoring the recent UNESCO designation of the Songkran Festival as an intangible cultural heritage. It also supports the Thai government’s global vision to promote the nation’s soft power, especially concerning tourism and festivals. Additionally, it seeks to position Songkran among the world’s top ten signature festivals, boosting Thailand’s attractiveness as a premier tourist destination.
Since their debut in 1991, Thailand has created a legacy at Sapporo, securing nine championship titles, including numerous consecutive wins. This year, the team, featuring Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Kritsana Wongtes, and Amnoaysak Srisuk, proudly upheld this tradition through their outstanding craftsmanship. Backed by TAT and equipped by CRC Sports Co., Ltd., the exclusive distributor of the Columbia brand in Thailand, their work reflects a blend of cultural pride, artistic skill, and thorough preparation.
At the festival, attendees could take photos of the sculpture and post their experiences on social media to earn Thai elephant keychains.
