Rock Garden, also known as the Nek Chand Saini’s Rock Garden, has never failed to attract tourists to its iconic spot. Open to the world since 1976, Rock Garden will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. To make the date even more special, the government of Chandigarh has announced a ‘revamp plan’ for the iconic landmark.
A Rocking Makeover
A meeting to discuss the makeover of the Rock Garden was organised by Hargunjit Kaur, secretary of Tourism, Chandigarh, which saw in attendance various officials of the tourism, architecture, and engineering departments. The new proposed plan, according to sources, will cost the government around ₹20 crore. Some of the additions in the new makeover plan include:
- A new gate
- A new Rock Café
- Extension of Doll Museum to Phase-3
- Expansion of sitting area
- More statues
- Cashless tickets
- New signages
- Internal pathways
- New events organised every weekend in the area
- Increased number of toilets and better upkeep
Surinder Bahga, a senior architect, told The Hindustan Times, “Unfortunately, after the death of its (Rock Garden’s) creator, Nek Chand, in June 2015, the administration has failed to conserve its sculptures, and deterioration has already started in a big way. I urge the administration to take immediate steps to control the damage.” Another senior official involved in the project stated, “We are hopeful to start the work by the end of this year and it will be completed in one year after the ministry releases funds.”
Rock Garden, spread over 40 acres, witnesses around 5000 visitors every day and generates a revenue of almost ₹1 lakh per day, making it the most popular and profitable spot in the area. Its home, Chandigarh, is also the most loved Indian destination amongst foreigners.
