Jetting Across the Atlantic: 60-Minute Test Flight

A hypersonic jet capable of travelling from London to New York in just one hour is set to undergo its first test flight in 2025. Developed by the startup engineering company Venus Aerospace, this advanced aircraft will reach incredible speeds of up to Mach 6 (3,600 mph/5,795 km/h) – six times the speed of sound. According to a report by Metro, the Venus Detonation Ramjet 2000 lb Thrust Engine, or VDR2, is the technology behind this breakthrough, making hypersonic flight possible.

Venus Aerospace is partnering with the aerospace company Velontra to conduct a test flight next year. This flight aims to pave the way for the “high-speed flight economy.” Unlike traditional aircraft, the hypersonic jet will fly higher and utilize conventional jet engines for takeoff before transitioning to rocket propulsion at altitude. While not technically reaching the edge of space, passengers will witness breathtaking views of the Earth’s curvature and the darkness of space above.

At the Up. Summit, Venus Aerospace co-founder Andrew Duggleby unveiled the new engine, stating, “This engine makes the hypersonic economy a reality. We are excited to partner with Velontra to achieve this revolution in high-speed flight, given their expertise in high-speed air combustion.”

Eric Briggs, Velontra’s COO

Eric Briggs, Velontra’s Chief Operating Officer, stated, “We are excited to start working on making the first aircraft fly and ultimately perfecting an engine concept that has only existed in textbooks and has never been produced for use in the air. We believe that Venus is the perfect partner for this endeavour. They are pioneers in rocketry and are prepared to tackle difficult challenges. We are eager to work alongside them on this journey.”

The hypersonic aviation landscape is heating up, with multiple players racing to develop revolutionary aircraft. Sierra Space and Hermeus are also joining Venus Aerospace to pursue Mach 6-capable planes. Meanwhile, China’s Space Transportation is working on a “rocket with wings” for space tourism and intercity travel. These innovative aircraft will transform the flying experience, offering unprecedented speed and efficiency. However, challenges remain, such as managing sonic boom noise and ensuring safety.
