Government Announces 5 New Districts for Ladakh

Five new Ladakh districts will be established, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the goal of bringing public services to those living in isolated parts of the Union Territory.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh: Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

“In pursuit of PM Narendra Modi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” the Home Minister tweeted.

“The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” he wrote.

The Center's action coincides with calls for Ladakh's statehood and its addition to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. For more than a year, Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist, has been calling for this. He has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep his word to the residents of the Union Territory on several occasions.
