The Thailand government has announced the extension of visa stays for foreign tourists, remote workers, retirees, and post-graduate students in the country. The decision is intended to attract more tourists to the country and boost its suffering economy.
Visa Extension Announcement
The country has approved extended tourist stays along with various other measures in its visa process. The new rules, to be put in place from June 2024, are:
- Thailand will allow tourists from around 93 countries and territories to enter the country without a visa and stay for up to 60 days. The list previously only involved 57 countries and regions.
- Citizens of 31 countries now (only 19 previously) will be granted visas on arrival.
- If remote workers wish to stay in Thailand, the government will extend their visas for up to five years, with each stay capped at 180 days.
- Foreign university students can stay in the country for one year after graduation.
- Insurance requirements for foreigners wanting to retire in the country will also be relaxed.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand, the country aims to welcome at least 35 million tourists in 2024, and such measures are bound to help the case.
