Africa Day 2025: Zurab Pololikashvili's Message

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili addresses Africa Day 2025, observed each year on May 25. This date marks the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 by 33 African countries, which later evolved into the African Union (AU) in 2002. Now, at 23 years old, the AU aims to achieve the pan-African ideals of unity, peace, and collective prosperity.

This year’s Africa Day offers a timely moment to reflect on emerging trends, persistent challenges, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

A significant milestone in 2025 is the successful conclusion of elections for a new AU Commission. While the Commission remains incomplete due to a lack of nominations from Central Africa, it has sparked a wave of pragmatism under its new chairperson, Mohamed Ali Yusuf, the former foreign minister of Djibouti. His appointment signals a move towards more neutral and effective leadership, paving the way for improved institutional reforms and cooperation.

Africa Day 2025 celebrates the continent's progress while highlighting the challenges that remain. Although the African Union and its member states confront significant issues—such as governance, security, climate vulnerability, and changing geopolitics—they also enjoy opportunities fueled by youth, innovation, and global engagement.

By actively owning its development agenda, enhancing democratic institutions, and strategically engaging diverse partners, Africa can create a future that is inclusive, resilient, and prosperous.
