TATA-owned Air India has announced its new retrofit programme. The programme, worth around $400 million, will refurbish around 67 old Air India aircraft. The plan has been launched as the next step in making Air India a global airline.

Refurbishing Past

In the first stage of the revamp plan, around 27 narrow body Airbus A320neo planes are being retrofitted. Once that is done, 40 wide body Boeing planes will be looked into. With the revamp, the airline aims to introduce new features and facilities like a modern three cabin layout, updated seats, carpets, curtains, upholstery etc. The upgraded plane will have eight luxury seats in Business Class, 24 extra legroom seats in Premium Economy, and 132 seats in Economy. Other features will include modern lighting, USB ports, and device holders. The VT-EXN kicked off the retrofit project on September 16. After it is revamped, the plane will re-enter service in December 2024. It will join the ranks of 8 new Air India planes that already feature these upgraded facilities and configuration.

“The commencement of interior refit of the narrowbody fleet is an important step in our journey of enhancing the flying experience of our customers. Over time, all the legacy widebody aircraft will also be refitted. This comprehensive upgradation of Air India’s physical product is an important component of Air India transforming into a world-class airline,” said Campbell Wilson, chief executive officer & managing director, Air India.
