Assisi to Host “Jordan: Dawn of Christianity” Exhibition Starting July 4
On July 4, the historic city of Assisi in Italy’s Umbria region will welcome the international travelling exhibition “Jordan: Dawn of Christianity,” following its earlier showing at the Vatican in February and March.
The exhibition will take place at the Palazzo Monte Frumentario, a restored 13th-century building that once served as a granary and charity centre. Overlooking Assisi’s historic streets, the Palazzo now serves as a cultural venue, offering a fitting setting for the exhibition’s spiritual and historical themes.
Assisi, renowned as the birthplace of Saint Francis, is a major pilgrimage site, attracting millions of visitors annually due to its rich religious and cultural significance. In 2019, King Abdullah II of Jordan received the Lamp of Peace in Assisi, recognizing his efforts for peace and interfaith dialogue—values shared by both Jordan and Saint Francis.
The exhibition coincides with the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year 2025, declared by Pope Francis under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” which encourages reflection and renewal of faith.
Jordan’s participation highlights its role in Christian heritage and its position as part of the Holy Land. The country is home to several important pilgrimage sites, including the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan—recognized by UNESCO—where Jesus was baptized. Other sites featured in the exhibition include Mount Nebo, the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain in Anjara, Tell Mar Elias, and Machaerus, each of which is connected to biblical history.
The exhibition also promotes religious tourism in Jordan, showcasing the country’s blend of faith, history, and culture, and inviting visitors to explore its Christian sites.
“Jordan: Dawn of Christianity” aims to share Jordan’s religious heritage with a global audience, promoting messages of peace, dialogue, and hope.
