Direct Flights from Kolkata to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur Launched

With improved connectivity choices, international travel from Kolkata Airport is receiving a much-needed boost this winter. In addition to Malaysia Airlines, which is starting direct flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur five days a week starting next week, new airline Thai Lion Air is scheduled to launch four weekly flights between Kolkata and Bangkok beginning in the middle of next month.

Thai Lion Air

Thai Lion Air, an associate company of Indonesian Lion Air and a low-cost carrier with Thai partners, will begin direct flights between Kolkata and Bangkok’s second airport at Don Mueang on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays as of December 16. At 12.30 am (local time), the flight will leave Bangkok and arrive in Kolkata at 1.35 am. On the return trip, it will depart Kolkata at 2.35 am and arrive at Don Mueang International Airport at 6.35 am (Thai time).

Malaysia Airlines

When its flights start on December 2, Malaysia Airlines will be the first foreign airline to link to Kolkata following the outbreak. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the flight will arrive in Kolkata at 11:10 p.m. MH 185, the leaving flight, will depart Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 12.10 am. With this new effort, Malaysia Airlines will become the second airline to offer direct flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur, joining AirAsia.

The city airport currently has around 137 direct international flights per week. The introduction of the two airlines will take that number to 146, airport officials said.

“Talks are on for resumption and addition of more international flights, and we are upgrading facilities at the international wing of the airport,” said Kolkata Airport Director Pravat Ranjan Beuria.

Earlier last month, AirAsia Thailand introduced direct daily flights between Kolkata and Phuket in Thailand. IndiGo is also set to increase flights between Kolkata and Bangkok to four times a week.
