Kerala Tourism Allots ₹2.82 Crore Action Plan for ‘This’ Neighbourhood

The Department of Tourism under the government of Kerala has granted its administration a budget of around ₹2.82 crore to develop a neighbourhood in Kochi. The sanction is aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and tourist facilities in the area.

The Department of Tourism under the government of Kerala has granted its administration a budget of around ₹2.82 crore to develop an improvement project for Fort Kochi.

Fort Kochi’s Makeover

The sanction aims to enhance the neighbourhood's infrastructure and tourist facilities. The action plan was created by Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Private Limited and approved by the Departmental Working Group on Plan Schemes. The development project will also aim to add world-class features to the tourist city and make it one of the top attractions in the area.

The development project, officially titled Action Plan for Enhancing Tourism Infrastructure at Fort Kochi, includes detailed steps on site preparation, landscaping, laying pavements, putting up signage, creating inbuilt and street furniture, renovating existing structures, electrical works, and installing street art and sculptures. It is aimed to be completed in the next 18 months.

Talking of the step, P. A. Mohammed Riyas, minister for PWD and Tourism, Kerala, stated, “The Fort Kochi Action Plan is aimed at creating world class infrastructure and amenities for tourists visiting the site, which boasts many heritage structures as well.”

Fort Kochi, or Fort Cochin or British Cochin, is a neighbourhood in Kochi, Kerala, that takes its name from its Portuguese colonial history. Rich in history and culture, it is a prominent tourist destination for domestic as well as international travellers. It was also ranked ninth in National Geographic’s Top Tourist Destinations to Explore in 2020.
