It stated that the tourism industry could be a significant source of job creation, particularly in the current challenging environment faced by the services and manufacturing industries due to factors such as the rise of AI, protectionism, and supply concerns. After the pandemic, India's tourism industry has shown signs of recovery, with over 92 lakh foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, marking a 43.5 percent year-on-year increase. Additionally, the hospitality industry has responded to the growing number of tourists by adding 14,000 rooms in 2023, the highest increase in supply. Referring to the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024 Report, the Economic Survey 2023-24 stressed the need for improvements in tourist services and infrastructure and the development of a skilled workforce. The Ministry of Tourism has introduced the Incredible India Tourism Facilitator Certificate Programme to formalize employment in the sector. The program aims to create a skilled cadre of tourist facilitators nationwide through a digital platform offering online learning opportunities and certification courses. The survey also acknowledged the impact of global inflationary pressures and capacity recovery delays on India's travel and tourism sector. Despite these challenges, the survey noted that India's price competitiveness has only declined by 0.7 percent, reflecting the government's efforts to maintain stability despite the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. India's foreign exchange receipts through tourism increased by 65.7 percent year-on-year, totaling over Rs 2.3 lakh crore. Furthermore, the survey highlighted the hospitality industry's efforts to meet the needs of the growing number of tourists by adding 14,000 rooms in 2023, bringing the total inventory of chain-affiliated rooms to 183,000 in India. Hoteliers are also leveraging technology to personalize guest experiences and improve operational efficiencies. Hotels are adopting innovative operational strategies, such as leasing or managing external restaurant, spa, and lounge brands, to enhance guest experiences and increase revenue. In FY24, the average daily rate increased from Rs 6704 to Rs 7616, showing a year-on-year growth of 13.6 percent. The survey also mentioned the tourism sector's embrace of the digital revolution, highlighting initiatives such as the E-Marketplace, which facilitates interactions between tourists and certified tourist facilitators and guides through web and mobile applications. #Travel #Tourism #hospitality #The Economic Survey #Tourism in India Subscribe to our Newsletter!
