Thailand and Bhutan Advance Sustainable Tourism Partnership
Thailand and Bhutan are strengthening their cooperation in sustainable tourism. From June 20 to 23, 2025, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted a delegation from Bhutan’s Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators (ABTO) for a field visit focused on sustainable tourism practices.
The visit aimed to support joint learning and collaboration under the “Two countries, One destination” framework, promoting responsible tourism and shared product development.
The programme began with a welcome session led by TAT Deputy Governor Ms. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai and other senior TAT officials. TAT shared Thailand’s sustainable tourism strategy, aligned with Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards, along with case studies from certified Thai businesses, such as The Westin Grande Sukhumvit.
From June 21 to 23, the Bhutanese delegation visited Nan Province to observe community-based and eco-friendly tourism models. They met with Nan’s Vice Governor, Mrs. Wilaiwan Budasa, to discuss regional cooperation and inclusive tourism. Visits included certified businesses such as Nan Boutique Hotel and Resort, Cocoa Valley, Saengthong Resort, and Pupakannapua, which covered eco-friendly practices, cultural preservation, and community tourism.
The programme also featured a tram tour of Nan Old Town, which holds ASEAN’s first Green Destinations Gold Level award in Asia for 2025, highlighting its creative approach to sustainable urban tourism.
This visit followed Bhutan’s participation in the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2025 in Khao Lak, Phang Nga, reinforcing both countries’ efforts to build deeper tourism ties under their shared vision.
