Speaking to Safari India’s Senior Correspondent Joyita Dutta, Malhotra shared that her long-standing connection with the Himalayas inspired the book. “I spend every summer in Manali, and over the years, I heard countless stories of deities, trances, and divine possession. My mission has always been to document disappearing cultures, and this book is a continuation of that journey,” she said.

Having previously made a documentary on the subject (telecast on Discovery in 2013), Malhotra explained her decision to transition to the written word. “Documentaries often don’t reach enough people. The book allowed me to expand the research and include chapters on trance, nature spirits, and sacred healing—topics rarely explored in detail,” she noted.

She also reflected on the creative shift from filmmaking to writing. “As a screenwriter, you show everything. With a book, you must describe every detail. It was challenging but deeply rewarding,” she said, adding that her personal experiences during filming strengthened her belief in the power of shamanic traditions.

Shamans of the Himalayas offers readers a rare window into mystical practices still alive in the mountains—now preserved in print for future generations.
