Sosei Sapporo: UNESCO’s Most Beautiful Hotel
Hotel Sosei Sapporo—MGallery Collection has earned a spot on the “World’s Most Beautiful Hotels List 2025,” as recognized by the Prix Versailles, which celebrates great architecture and design.
On June 2nd, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced the 2025 Prix Versailles winners. Hotel Sosei Sapporo—MGallery Collection is one of 16 awardees. These recently opened or reopened hotels, located around the world, are known for their unique mix of heritage and innovation.
Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles
Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, said: “The common thread between these 16 extraordinary hotels is the fact that they all elevate expertise and local heritage. But more than that, they are all the fruit of extremely advanced design work, a reflection of clear, across-the-board collaboration between their creators and their regions. The artistic approach serves hospitality here by shining a light on its multiple influences and adding a touch of warmth, clarity and meaning, in order to construct what are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful destinations in the world.”
A respected jury has recognized Hotel Sosei Sapporo—MGallery Collection as one of the 16 most beautiful hotels in the world. This award is a great honour for the hotel, which opened in January 2024.
Hotel Sosei Sapporo—MGallery Collection is located in the heart of Sapporo, Japan, on the site of the historic 1876 Kaitakushi Brewery, the birthplace of Sapporo Beer. Today, the hotel features brick walls, reclaimed beams, and an industrial design reflecting the brewery’s legacy. The hotel has 118 rooms and was designed by Taisei Corporation, with interiors created by Studio Crow.

The hotel’s design reflects Sapporo’s heritage by blending past and present and mixing Eastern and Western styles. In the late 19th century, the Kaitakushi residences featured Western-style reception rooms alongside Japanese living spaces, showing a lifestyle that combined formal and everyday life. The hotel’s rooms bring this idea to life by combining warm wood, soft washi textures, and natural materials.
Guests can enjoy a four-part visual experience called “Passion for Beer Research.” This journey honours Seibei Nakagawa, Japan’s first brewmaster. The experience includes art installations, such as a glowing wall made from recycled beer bottles and a copper fireplace shaped like a brewing kiln. At the end of the day, travellers can relax with a glass of Sapporo Draft, where it all began, or try a signature cocktail inspired by the seasons of Hokkaido. Start with discovery, not directions.
As the MGallery Collection is all about immersive experiences, the hotel also offers a trip through history. With this unique M Moment, guests ride a traditional rickshaw through red-brick lanes and brewery chimneys, retracing where Sapporo’s beer culture began.

“The Prix Versailles is one of the world’s most prestigious architecture and design accolades, so we are thrilled with this distinction. Having achieved the Prix Versailles for Manly Pacific Hotel Sydney – MGallery Collection in 2024, this latest accolade is another example of how MGallery is successfully crafting unique hotels that celebrate local culture and raise the standard of architecture and design in the hospitality industry. I would like to congratulate the entire team at Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection for this outstanding achievement,” said Elodie Noël, Global Senior Vice President – Design & Technical services, Sofitel, Sofitel Legend, MGallery and Emblems.
The architectural prizes discerned by the Prix Versailles aim to promote intelligent sustainability, in which culture serves and transcends the notion of the environment. Three hotels from the 2025 List will also receive the further distinction of a World Title – Prix Versailles, Interior or Exterior – to be awarded in December.
