United is accelerating the rollout of new technology, with about 40 regional jet installations planned each month.

United's Starlink Planes Ready

United Airlines announced that the FAA has approved its first aircraft fitted with Starlink, with the first commercial flight planned for May, less than eight months after the deal was first revealed.

The FAA has granted a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the Embraer 175, and the airline anticipates that the first commercial flight will take place on a United Express Embraer 175. United is speeding up the rollout of this new technology, with around 40 regional jet installations scheduled each month, and aims to complete the integration into its entire two-cabin regional fleet of over 300 aircraft by the end of the year.

Along with obtaining the STC, United will conduct a beta test of the new technology on chosen flights leading up to the first customer flight in May, ensuring every aspect provides an exceptional onboard experience for passengers.

"We know customers are going to love this experience, and we think it will give them yet another reason to choose United," said Grant Milstead, United's Vice President of Digital Technology.

"We're working closely with Starlink and the FAA to finish installs on our regional fleet this year and bring the best inflight experience in the sky to more and more people."

United plans to collaborate with Starlink to obtain an FAA STC for installing Starlink on all United aircraft types receiving the new equipment, such as the Embraer 175, totaling over 16 regional and mainline aircraft models. The FAA states that obtaining each STC involves design, installation, testing, and submitting the necessary documentation for approval.

Earlier this month, United introduced the Starlink installation process, highlighting the technical operational advantages of the equipment, such as its size, weight, and simplified installation and maintenance. Compared to non-Starlink equipment, the Starlink system enables a quicker and more straightforward installation, is lighter, consuming less fuel during operation, and offers enhanced reliability and weather resistance.

All MileagePlus customers will enjoy complimentary Starlink access, featuring revolutionary inflight entertainment options such as streaming services, shopping, gaming, and more. With Wi-Fi speeds reaching up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps)- a remarkable 50 times faster than the existing speeds of regional aircraft- this service enhances the travel experience.
