Think of iconic airports and London’s Heathrow is bound to make the list. The world’s love for it is proven with Heathrow’s June figures, which showcase that a record number of people visited the airport in the month.

Records Broken by Heathrow

All its previous records were broken by Heathrow in June as the airport saw multiple days of hosting around 260,000 passengers in a day. There were also five days when Heathrow had to accommodate more than 260,000 passengers in a single day. According to the airport, around 7.4 million passengers used Heathrow’s services in June 2024, and its busiest day was June 30 when it handled more than 268,000 passengers. More passengers meant more staff, with the airport staff numbers reaching more than 90,000 personnel.

Talking of their operation at such numbers, which are just as high in July, Heathrow officials said, “To get passengers to their destination on time, Heathrow, airlines, and ground handlers have joined forces on the ‘on time together’ campaign, working together to maximise punctuality during our busiest summer ever. The baggage resilience team will be deployed to ensure a robust baggage service and hundreds of ‘Heathrow helpers’ are stationed throughout the terminal to assist passengers at every step of their journey.”

Heathrow’s chief executive officer Thomas Woldbye stated, “June has seen more Heathrow records shattered including serving more passengers in a single day than ever before. I want to thank all my colleagues who went the extra mile to make sure the 268,000 passengers travelling on the busiest day had a smooth, stress free journey. I am thrilled these efforts have been recognised by ACI Europe, highly commending Heathrow in the recent best airport awards. We have started summer as we mean to go on.”

CAA Changes Rules

The numbers were published by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as it talked of the changes the organisation will be making on the charges Heathrow levies on airlines using the airport. According to the CAA, the new changes will reflect a reduction in charges for the “over recovery” of revenue of Heathrow in 2020 and 2021, elimination of premium allowed on indexed linked debt in calculating Heathrow’s cost of capital, and changes to ensure that Heathrow’s charges reflect the cost of pension, repair payments, and business rates.
