Air Niugini has placed a firm order with Airbus for an additional two of the latest generation single-aisle A220-100s. This comes after an earlier order in 2023 that included six aircraft. Moreover, the airline has signed lease agreements for three A220-300s with US-based lessor Azorra. This new order was announced as the airline’s first A220 was finalised at Airbus facilities in Mirabel, Canada.

Gary Seddon, Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini said: “The A220 is set to form the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet and will support economic development  in Papua New Guinea. As we continue to forecast strong growth we have made the decision to increase our orders for this fuel efficient type, bringing a whole new level of efficiency and comfort for our operations.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business said: “This is Air Niugini’s second order for the A220. We are committed to working closely with the airline as we support its fleet renewal programme. The A220 is quite simply the most efficient aircraft in its size category, with a wider and spacious cabin and the range to fly non-stop to any destination on the carrier’s network.”

With the longest range and lowest fuel consumption, the A220 stands out as the most advanced airliner in its size category. It accommodates 100 to 160 passengers on routes of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). Depending on the cabin configuration, the A220-100 caters to the 100-135-seat market, while the larger A220-300 is ideally suited for the 120-160-seat market.

The A220 features Pratt & Whitney’s state-of-the-art GTF engines, achieving a 25% decrease in fuel usage and carbon emissions per seat relative to earlier aircraft models. Like all Airbus planes, the A220 is designed to use up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus has set a goal for all its jets to be able to run on up to 100% SAF by 2030.

By the end of April 2025, Airbus had secured over 900 orders from over 30 customers for the A220, with more than 410 units delivered. The A220 is already successfully operating with 24 global operators. Currently, the fleet flies on over 1,600 routes, covering more than 470 destinations worldwide, reaffirming its dominance in the small single-aisle market.
