AirAsia MOVE Highlights Indonesia’s Rowboat Festivals Amid Global Interest in Pacu Jalur
A traditional rowing festival from Kuantan Singingi, Riau, recently gained global attention after a viral video showed a boy standing at the front of a Pacu Jalur boat with energetic movements. The video sparked an “aura farming” trend on social media, drawing interest from celebrities and international viewers.
This moment has created new opportunities to introduce Indonesia’s cultural traditions to a broader audience. In response, AirAsia MOVE is encouraging travellers to discover other rowing festivals across the country.
Amelia Virginia, Marketing Manager of AirAsia MOVE Indonesia, said, “The recent spotlight on Pacu Jalur has inspired us to invite travellers to explore more of Indonesia’s diverse traditions. AirAsia MOVE makes it easier to plan trips to various parts of the country, connecting travellers with local cultures.”
Pacu Jalur, believed to date back to the 17th century, represents not just competition but also the spirit of community cooperation. Similar rowing festivals can be found in other regions, each with its own story and appeal. Here are three well-known examples:
Jukung Rowing Competition – Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan
Held every August 17 on the Martapura River, this event marks Indonesia’s Independence Day and celebrates the traditional jukung boat. It has been part of the local tradition since 1924 and brings together people from across the region.
Dragon Boat Festival – Tangerang, Banten
This festival, rooted in Chinese tradition, is held on the Cisadane River. Teams of 13 rowers race dragon-shaped boats accompanied by drums, cymbals, and festive performances, creating a lively atmosphere.
Bidar Boat Race – Palembang, South Sumatra
Also held around Indonesia’s Independence Day, this race takes place on the Musi River. Long, narrow bidar boats are paddled by large teams, with the event symbolizing unity and teamwork.
These festivals are just a few examples of Indonesia’s rich traditions. AirAsia MOVE invites travellers to experience these cultural events and explore more destinations across the archipelago.
